Description

-Wide New World +8-

"Eight years after the Event, the Three Nations have faced many challenges, and the human world has seen much change and growth. One of the most profound changes happened in Event +5, when the territories of Kerguelan, Reunion and Clippterton island phased into the new world in a smaller-scale repeat of the Event.

After contact was established, these new (French) territories provided a great deal of information on the changes that had taken place in the world we had left behind. Indeed, as theorised, the territories we had left had been replaced with their counterparts from this world - pristine wild environments completly devoid of human life. These new territories had also led a seperate existance for the last five years, seperate from their former homeland, and many had no desire to be "brought back into the fold". Indeed, it didn't take long for "Outre-mer", as these lands collectively termed themselves, to declare their independance from post-Event France. France's overseas territories in the Pacific and Caribbean, who had felt increasingly ignored and isolated since the Event, followed suit, and soon a pro-independance movement in French Guiana took up arms and declared solidarity with Outre-mer, pushing an isolated and beleaguered French Republic military back to Cayenne within a few months. Reports of covert support by the British were never confirmed, however a deep suspicion and distrust now exists between Britain and France, not least because of Britain's development of "colonies" at the mouths of the Maas, the Rhine and the Elbe on the continent. Britain was also quick to establish colonies at the mouths of the Mississippi and the Silver River (Rio de la Plata) in the Cabotias (Americas).

Britain's success and relative stability is owed largely to the North Sea - while large numbers of oil rigs on the surface were brought over with the Event, huge deposits of oil and gas beneath the ocean bed were suddenly found replenished, untouched by human activity, with similar results in the water surrounding the Falklands. The Royal Navy was sent immidiately to protect these resources and aid the crew of rigs to begin extraction immidiately. In the first few years after the Event, Britain became the Three Nation's primary source of oil and later, petrol, as stocks began to run dry. Until France developed colonies in the Saarland to extract the vast coal and iron deposits, Britain had almost unchallenged control over the energy market.

Along France's eastern fringe now exists a dozen larger states and dozens of small diverse and independant communities, the legacy of the Communautés Bloqués. A common occourance is the gathering of expats from countries other than the Three Nations banding together to found some new state in memory or mimicry of their former homeland - Nuevo Portugal in northern Africa, the Waterford Republic in Ireland, and Maggiore Genova. Mostly such settlements have been peaceful, but a certain element of "historical claims" over "former lands" has existed in many regions.

Spain, while initially prosperous for the first few years with heavy settlement-building in the lands of Portugal and around the western Mediterranean, descended into civil war in Event +7, with ethnic tensions boiling over and many small splinter groups joining forces to fight Spain's policy of only allowing "central spanish" to take part in colonial projects. Rebel forces, which include disenchanted factions of the Spanish military, now control large areas in the north-east and north-west of the country, and colonial projects have had to be put on hold due to the increased financial toll of fighting the uprising at home."

Continuation of my Wide New World series :D Hope people like it. The lighter areas represent colonisations in the eight years since the Event, while darker areas generally represent original territories which transfered over (the darkest areas in Spain represent rebel held provinces). Questions and comments welcome! I'm sure I've left a lot of description out here :)

Oh, I see what happened to Reunion and the Kerguelen Islands. Interesting stuff.

Hmm, what's gonna be in the next installment? A divided Sardinia? More displaced nations? It's all for me to find out.
